WoW Classic really shouldn't exist. There's absolutely no reason why this many fans should want to return to content that is over a decade old, let alone to celebrate its return by completely tanking the game's servers for the first few days as Blizzard scrambled to alleviate login congestion. In an industry that is constantly pushing forward, nostalgia is usually dished out in quick hits - a remaster of a game, sure, even some that take dozens of hours to complete - but there's always a new hook. Appearing on a modern console. Adding some elements that, in retrospect, would've vastly improved a game. Even just fixing some bugs can amount to a new lease on life for some IPs. WoW Classic doesn't do any of that.
Players often actively avoided looting anything they killed when the game launched in 2004, due to the amount of time they would have to spend sliding across the ground in the looting position as the game struggled to keep up with its players. The most laggy areas in Classic remain more or less playable, even with thousands of players. There might be a delay before an item is transferred into your bags or a quest giver coughs out their lines, but the game has been playable despite the early crowds ... once you’ve managed to get in, of course. Even here in 2019, the core gameplay loop of classic WoW is a lot of fun, and I don’t think that’s only nostalgia talking. It’s slow, that’s for sure, but that’s okay because WoW Classic is something to be savored. There have been and will be plenty of people trying to race to WoW Classic’s level cap of 60, but I would argue that taking your time and getting immersed in the world around you can only improve the experience. That’s especially true for folks who haven’t spent any time playing on unofficial, private vanilla servers. In short: If this is your first foray into vanilla WoW since 2004, take your time in playing this game.
Overall World of Warcraft Classic is a solid effort and a ton of fun. Like I mentioned previously, I never wanted to bring back Vanilla and yes, there are some things which have been annoying me. Like having to face my target when I Moonfire or clicking on a quest item out in the world, but someone else clicks first and gets it. I’m not sure how long I will keep with Classic, but right now I am having fun and only logging onto retail for raid nights, which says a lot.
