SHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR KIDS JUNK AND CANDY OCCASIONALLY

Before we attempt to answer the question, let's first try to understand why it even has to be asked in the first place. Unless if you have been living under a rock, you would have known that nutrition experts have been demonizing sugar for the past decade or so – and this has resulted in an entirely new industry that focuses on sugar alternatives. Fast food suffers a similar backlash – and this is why healthier offerings (Chicken McWrap, anyone?) are cropping up across the nation's fast food eateries.

So, why the bad rep? As it turns out, sugar is really detrimental to your health (especially when not taken in moderation). They are not called empty calories for nothing - sugar has been known to cause various health issues ranging from obesity and metabolic syndrome to diabetes and heart diseases. It is also addictive and present in almost every food, which is why cutting back on sugar can be extremely difficult.

Fast food, on the other hand, does a number on your health with its high sodium, carb and trans fat content. This lethal combination can cause a multitude of health problems when taken in excess, namely obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, peptic ulcer and even depression.

Now that you are aware of all that, do you still want to give your kids junk food and candy? The answer is probably a resounding no, but we know that it is unrealistic to avoid them altogether. It is also counter-productive to put a blanket ban on fast food and candy in your household, as this will only serve to make your kids curious or intensify their cravings. Charlotte Markey,a health psychology professor at Rutgers University and author of Smart People Don't Diet: How Psychology, Common Sense, and the Latest Science Can Help You Lose Weight Permanently, agrees, “I’m certainly not saying that we should load our kids up on junk food,” Markey, told TODAY Parents, “But we don’t want to make it so off limits that it starts to have sort of a mystique or appeal.”

Hear, hear.

Plus, being too restrictive on junk foods can make your kids overeat as soon as they have access to these “forbidden foods”. And think about it, even rational adults like us are not immune to the appeal of junk food. We wish to say that all the aforementioned information are enough to turn everyone off those foods forever – but the truth cannot be further. Due to their deliciousness and easy accessibility (as compared to preparing a meal from scratch or the pricier sugar-free version), we will always still have the occasional fast food meal, baby stores online, and even finish it off with a piece of cake sometimes.

So, the answer is yes, you should give your kids junk food from time to time – especially if they have been requesting for it. And needless to say, their everyday diet must be well-balanced enough (with plenty of vegetables) for you to give in to their demand every now and then. Furthermore, you must bear in mind that letting them have junk food does not mean a no-holds-barred approach – considering the consequences, you should still try to make the option as healthy as can be. Here's how to do it.

(Fast food)

1. Whenever possible, hold the soda and opt for other drinks like iced lemon tea and orange juice. While those two drinks are also not the healthiest of choices due to their sugar content, they at least offset it a little by offering a small amount of nutrients.

2. Always, always go for the smaller meal if you can help it. Do not ever think about getting more value for your money by choosing the larger meal – as this so-called value is definitely not worth your kids' obesity and heart disease risk in the long run!

3. Ask if they can halve the sauce in the burger and the salt in the fries. Burgers these days are overloaded with sauce anyway, baby shoes, and there'll hardly be any compromise on the taste if you do it. Ditto the salt in fries.

4. Opt for healthier sides. Thanks to the ongoing health movement, most fast food restaurants have begun offering healthier sides like salad, corn and etc. to replace the traditional salt-laden fries. Make use of these options to better your kids' health!

5. When offering your kids other junk food like potato chips, baby toys, portioning is the key to making sure they do not gain weight. Check the recommended serving size on the packaging and portion it out into a small bowl.

(Sugary treats)
1. Again, portioning is key here. Check the recommended serving size AND the sugar content of the food before serving it to your kids. It is important to note that the MAXIMUM recommended sugar intake per day is 19g (or 5 teaspoons) and 24g (or 6 teaspoons for children between 4-6 years old and 7-10 years old respectively.

2. If a sugar hit is what they are after, offer them chopped up fruits instead! Too boring? Food presentation matters more than you think so get creative and make it aesthetically pleasing to your kids. A tiny dollop of honey and vanilla yogurt can also make a huge difference in both the taste and presentation department!

3. Shop for healthier treats and display these options prominently e.g. at your kid's eye level. When you do this, your kids will be more encouraged to pick them instead of say, trying to reach the pack of chocolate wafers at the back of the cupboard. Applecrumby & Fish offers a wide range of sweet and yet nutritious snacks that won't burn a hole in your wallet! Find natural sweet treats like the Frutzee Crunchy range that come with no added sugar, no additives, no preservatives and are 100% fat-free and non-GMO to boot!

Conclusion

We all want our kids to be the healthiest versions of themselves – that's part of the reason why you are even reading this in the first place (kudos to you!). As such, don't forget that it is also important to teach them about the deleterious effects of one too many meals of junk food. Lastly, remember to not make a big fuss about it too i.e. putting an outright ban on it. When you make an effort to get your children to eat healthy most of the time, the occasional Happy Meal will not derail their health by much!
